Mudcloth is a unique West African traditional textile art form. Also known as Bògòlanfini or Bogolan, mudcloth was pioneered by the women of Mali’s Bambara culture centuries ago with patterns symbolising their cultural heritage, environmental knowledge, wealth, relationships and status. Hand picked cotton is cleaned and hand-spun into thread. Traditional hand-looms are used to weave strips of fabric which are then sewn together into larger pieces of fabric. The dying begins by soaking the fabric in a brew of leaves, bark and wood. Layers of clay-rich mud are applied with sticks and brushes; one mud-application and one dye-bath are required for each successive shade of colour. 100% cotton | This fabric is NOT colourfast and cannot be washed in water. Dry-cleaning is recommended. Approximate dimensions: Length = 2.3m | Width = 1.71m Note: hand made products may have characteristic blemishes which add to their unique authenticity.
